Brooke waltzed into the woods right next to the trails, following the small thread of magic leading to the well known Ajax. She followed it until she came to a clearing where she had never seen so many animals in one place....there was every type of animal surrounding a boy no older than 20......and he was not bad looking if she had to say so herself. She walked over to him, careful not to disturb the animals. "Are you Ajax?" she asked, then mentally smacked herself for asking such a stupid question.

((that's me, and okami has a crush on a fourteen year old))
Ajax slowly opened his eyes from his meditation. In front of him stood a beautiful, immaculate girl with hazel eyes. He whispered softly. "That's me. Hold on." Standing up, the tall boy said goodbye to each of the animals, and then walked over to Brooke. "Hi. Nice to meet you. I'm Ajax Dawes, and if you're looking for lessons, I can introduce you to Mari. I'm a hired hand." His almost sleepy-looking green eyes pierced her own, surprisingly bright in such a quiet and content-looking person. Having just meditated, he hadn't quite reentered the real world yet. The woods around him were his home, the animals his family. He was always quite happy at this time of day-- just after dawn. How had this girl found his secret retreat? A seed of worry grew in his gut.

Brooke sensed his worry...."oh dont worry....I was just wondering if you could help me....I followed your thread of magic here...I always set one up with the people I like." she blushed furiously...."Anyways," she started again, "I was wondering if you could help me....I would like to find a wild horse that likes me.....I dont want to pick it....I was wondering if there is a way for one to pick me.....whatever I have to do for you I will do it....just tell me if its possible..." she hated herself for sounding so stupid in front of the only guy who seemed to listen to her....the only one that she liked in all of Cerimostyn Academy.

The boy slowly grinned, his white teeth flashing in a small smile. The smile disappeared more quickly than it came, though, and he looked into the woods thoughtfully. "There's one herd that lives in the mountains, though communicating with them is kind of tough. I could see if one wants to come, but I'll never force any animal. I will help you train a wild one from that herd but you'd have to be the one with the most physical contact; I'll help you along a bit with the mental. You don't seem to have my gift, but you're obviously special." At this Brooke's blush grew deeper. "It's possible, if you're willing to put a lot of time and love into a horse. If one doesn't want to come, I have several of my own that you can train with." This was the most he'd said at a time since he didn't know when. This girl and her self-doubt around him seemed to make him talkative. He looked at her again, a serious look in his eyes.

She nodded, "Ok I'll do it. Can we go now?" she asked with hope. She crossed her fingers behind her back. 'Please say yes...' she thought.

Ajax thought for a minute, then looked at Brooke's hopeful face. She was so attractive... and not many girls were attractive to him; he'd become kind of immune. He loved his animals so much that he'd become detached from most humans besides Mari. "Follow me," he said, eyeing her nice clothes. "You're probably going to get a little dirty.. wait, I have a better idea." He headed towards the barn. This way, they'd get there faster and with less effort, he'd get to ride, and he'd be able to test Brooke on how well she understood animals.

Brooke's face lit into a smile as he said ok. She noticed that he looked over her clothes and mentioned something about getting dirty....."My clothes never get dirty." she replied. He looked at her strangely and then headed towards the barn. She decided to follow him. They walked in and she smelt the relaxing smell of a barn. This was the only reminder of her old home in the barn. She went and laid in some straw, and Ajax turned to look at her, surprised. "You like barns?" he asked her. "Of course! What did you think I was? A fake or something? I used to LIVE in a barn.....horses were basically my life....and I used to have a dog....but my parents took her away from me....." she felt tears start to prick her eyes at the mention of her parents so she stopped talking. She turned her head so that Ajax wouldnt notice her tears...he saw them anyways. She furiously rubbed them away and got up to help Ajax get the horses ready.....he asked her the dreaded question.....

((what dreaded question now?)) Ajax refrained from asking Brooke any questions about her parents, as it seemed to be a sore spot. He'd never been as good with people as he was with animals, but girls seemed attracted to him often. He stayed pretty quiet as he showed Brooke to her horse-- an Arabian mix called Aiya, a slightly spirited little mare who could tell how experienced her rider was and put up with whatever mistakes he or she made. Ajax had trained Aiya himself from when she was born and had a special bond with her. He didn't ride her often but let her roam with the tamer herd on the other side of the woods often. Fortunately, she had been in heat and so he brought her to the barn to make sure she didn't get pregnant until he picked out a special stallion from the mountain herd. She would be the best horse for Brooke as a placeholder until she was used to his horses enough to train her own. For now, after she picked her horse, he would prepare it until she was ready. He watched Brooke tack up after he had finished tacking his own chestnut thoroughbred stallion, Ashquar. Her skills surprised him, for having not been trained. When she finished he showed her outside and pointed to one of the trails. "Need a leg up?" Brooke shook her head no, the tears long gone. Ajax's comfortable mannerisms had calmed her just as it calmed his animals. "That goes toward the mountains. Stay with me and don't go at a gait faster than mine. You used to riding English or Western?" he asked as he mounted. Test her for me, and tell me as we ride. She's going to be my protege, he mind-spoke to Aiya. Don't scare her off with any crazy antics, though. Aiya snorted and tossed her head as she replied sarcastically, Don't worry, darling, I'm not crazy at all. I'll make sure and test her carefully. Ajax chuckled and Brooke glanced at him questioningly. He ignored this and said to his own stallion, You stay away from Aiya. No flirtations, you hear? And please, no craziness. The stallion replied simply by reaching his muzzle out to touch Aiya's neck in a friendly gesture. Ajax made a note to himself to keep them a good distance apart, though this would make conversation difficult. ((The nature of wild magic doesn't allow for eavesdropping by anybody except other wild mages.))

Brooke was glad that he didnt ask the question after all. He seemed to be nice, as well as cute! She sensed that Ajax was speaking to her horse...telling it to test her in some way. She was up for the challenge! She stayed next to Ajax, stride for stride. He seemed surprised that she could do all the manuevers that he could..just as easily. She chuckled. 'Did you really think that I couldnt ride?' she forced into his mind. He looked at her surprised. "You have mind magic?!?!" he asked with a surprised/scared look on his face. She threw her head back and laughed. "Only enough to send a mind message to you....its the very small amout that I can use....I cant do anything else dont worry. I dont know what youre saying to Aiya. Although I do know youre tlaking to her." Ajax gazed at her quietly for a moment.

Then, laughing, he asked his gelding Ashquar to go a little faster. "We might just have a race in our near future..." he said in a mock mysterious voice, and sped towards the base of the mountain. Brooke kept up easily, as she was riding an Arabian which tends to be flight of feet and light enough to go really fast. Both horses and riders were slightly winded by the time they reached the slight sloping of this mountain's foothills, and they stopped to catch their breath. "It'll be a little dangerous to ride up the mountain, and I don't want to risk their legs," Ajax said, nodding at his beloved horses. Brooke helped him remove the tack and set it under a tree. "Nobody comes around here-- it won't be stolen," he said of the tack while rubbing Ashquar's neck. He checked both of the horses' feet, lingering on Aiya's right hoof to unlodge a stone with a stick sitting on the ground and then healing the sore frog a little for good measure. "Okay. The herd is not too far up the mountain-- really, you could say it's in the upper foothills." He started off, looking behind him to make sure Brooke was ready.

Brooke looked back at him with confidence. He seemed to like her...that was a good thing because she was falling for him. He didnt seem to be interested in her looks, he semed to like her personality, and she adored that about him. She gave Aiya one last pat and headed off towards the mountains for an exhilarating hike. She quickly caught up to Ajax and walked next to him.

Ajax couldn't believe he was talking so easily to a girl-- a human. He grinned to himself as Brooke caught up with him. Mari had been talking to him lately about maybe getting some human contact so he wouldn't become totally removed, or too, well, wild. Wild mages tended to be like him, and sometimes they even accidentally slipped too far into their animal minds, as they could also shapeshift. ((i forgot about shapeshifting!! woohoo))

Brooke wished she could hear his thoughts. She walked with him for a bit more in silence then decided to try to start a conversation. "So...do you think a horse will like me?" she kicked herself at the stupid choice of words. She blushed as she waited for his reply.
